The CCA are committed to work together to protect the land, lakes, waterways and people in the region from pollution caused by coal-ash waste and safeguard Lake Macquarie from harm now, and in the future.
Coal-ash Community Alliance Inc. / PO Box 1024, Toronto NSW 2283 / coalashalliance@gmail.com
Lake Macquarie and Central Coast residents formed the Coal-Ash Community Alliance in March 2019 and incorporated in June after learning about the approximately 100 million tonnes of coal-ash waste dumped on the shores of Lake Macquarie by the Vales Point and Eraring coal-fired power stations.
Heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, selenium, boron, nickel, copper and manganese are leaching from these expansive and un-lined coal-ash waste dumps, causing pollution of surface water, groundwater and bio-accumulation in the aquatic species, including fish and mud-crab of this precious coastal ecosystem.
Members of the CCA, like so many in the wider community want to see this significant and beautiful saltwater lake, its abundant fish species, unique array of fauna and flora thrive for many decades to come, and for future generations to enjoy it just like we have been able to.
