2 of NSW’s 5 operating coal fired power stations are located on the shores of Lake Macquarie.
Once the coal has been burned, the coal ash waste that remains is dumped into unlined dams which leak pollutants including heavy metals into the waterways of Lake Macquarie. Elevated levels of heavy metals have well documented negative impacts on both human and environmental health.
Research performed by HCEC shows that the levels in the lake exceed both human and environmental health guidelines for safe use. This is of great concern as Lake Macquarie is not only a home to an array of beautiful aquatic and bird life but is also frequently used for recreational and fishing purposes.
HCEC is looking for help to tell the power stations and the NSW government to #CleanUpCoalAsh, and to invest in the safe re-use of the 200+ million tonnes of coal ash waste currently stored at the power stations unlined dumps in NSW.
