Informal Anouncement of Review of Public Forestry Regulations

The long-overdue five year review of the Integrated Forestry Operations Approvals for Upper and Lower North East and the Eden Forestry Regions has been informally anounced by the NSW Government in responce to a question by Greens MLC Ian Cohen.
Tony Kelly, Minister for Land, representing the Minister for the Environment in the Upper House stated that
The terms of reference for the review are being finalised and a notice in several newspapers will be published in early 2008 to provide for the  six month period for public representations as required by the Forestry  and National Estate Act 1998. The legislation restricts the review to  assessing the implementation of the provisions of the agreement and  whether integrated forestry operations approvals are effective in achieving their purpose.  (Answer received on 29 November 2007and published in Questions & Answers Paper No. 33.)

The NCC engaged Paul Winn in 2004 to research and report on aspects of forestry operations in NSW coastal forests that required regulatory reform to meet stated sustainability targets.
As the terms of reference for these reviews will be published in early 2008 for public comment, it is timely for all those who care for the sustainability of NSW coastal forests to begin the task of responding to the terms of reference. These terms are likley to be far narrower that what are required for true ecological sustainable forest managament and will take a concerted effort to alter in order to achieve sound forestry pactice.
